Sensors ensure precise measurements during tyre recycling process

21st February 2025

The sensors installed at forward-looking recycling and plant engineering company Pyrum Innovations’ tyre shredding facility in Dillingen, Germany, offer precise pressure and level measurements throughout the tyre shredding process, especially in the reactor where the core action takes place.

The sensors – provided by process measurement technology manufacturer Vega Instruments – include a Vegabar 83 pressure transmitter which monitors the gas pressure during the process, while the Vegaflex 86 guided radar sensors and Vegaswing 61 limit switches ensure stable operation in harsh environments.

The sensors “guarantee product quality and protect equipment from damage”, while providing precise measurements and boasting a straightforward design. Further, their “sturdy” design translates to minimised downtime and operational disruptions as they can be serviced by non-specialised staff.

Vega Instruments says its sensors excel in a range of industrial settings, and their simple installation and configuration procedures make them highly sought after.

It notes that, as Pyrum expands its global operations, the importance of precise measurement and ease of use becomes even more critical.

Vega’s advanced sensors play a vital role in Pyrum’s operational achievements, enabling the precision and dependability needed to fulfil the strict requirements of extensive tyre recycling processes.

By delivering precise measurements and streamlining operational effectiveness, Vega significantly contributes to advancing environmental sustainability and fostering a more resilient circular economy.

Pyrum Innovations is reported to have “set the tyre recycling process ablaze” with its innovative approach to repurposing old tyres by implementing a unique solution of pyrolysing shredded tyres in an oxygen-free environment, where valuable materials such as coke, gas, and oil are produced.

Worldwide, tyre disposal remains a major challenge, and in Europe, there is a need to dispose of over three-million tonnes of tyres each year.

Pyrum Instruments’ second pyrolysis reactor, recently commissioned, can process 5 000 t of rubber granulate a year – equivalent to about 7 500 t of tyres.
